Accounting certificate programs are ideal for people new to the subject or for those who would like to supplement their work experience with formal education. Some of these programs provide a wide range of instruction on the topic, while others only cover the basic components of accounting. Many schools offer more than one certificate in accounting, including accounting technology management, accounting operations, accounting applications and accounting specialist programs. These programs require completion of 12-28 credit hours, and some feature practical experiences, like an internship. Nine of the largest 2- and 4-year public colleges in Florida offering certificates in accounting are presented below.

Broward College

Fort Lauderdale's Broward College is a large institution with more than 40,000 students attending each year. This 4-year school offers an accounting technology management technical certificate program. The 27-credit program explores business and mathematics functions in accounting. Additional courses cover taxes and legal issues.

Eastern Florida State College

Eastern Florida State College in Cocoa is a 2-year school with more than 17,000 undergraduate students attending. The school has a variety of accounting certificates available for college credit and vocational training purposes. The 27-credit accounting technology management certificate program was designed to help students pursue entry-level positions in business and other industries. This college-credit certificate can be transferred into the associate's degree in business administration program. Individuals seeking additional accounting training or those already employed in the industry might consider an 18-credit accounting technology operations certificate program. This program explores the preparation and organization of financial reports and documents. The 12-credit accounting technology specialist program focuses on preparing reports through data entry, analysis and presentation of the material.

Florida State College at Jacksonville

More than 30,000 undergraduate students attend Florida State College at Jacksonville. Three accounting technical certificates are offered at this 4-year institution. The 27-credit accounting technology management program teaches students to record and analyze financial reports. The 18-credit accounting technology operations certificate is a shorter program that focuses on payroll, taxes, spreadsheets and microcomputer applications. Finally, a 12-credit accounting technology specialist certificate program offers a payroll class that readies individuals to take the designated exam to become a certified payroll professional.

Hillsborough Community College

Hillsborough Community College is a 2-year school in Tampa. The 30-credit accounting applications certificate program helps students become clerks, assistants or junior accountants. The program explores the financial and managerial components of accounting. Additionally, the curriculum covers accounting for cost and tax preparations. Students may be able to transfer some credits to the school's associate's degree in accounting technology program.

Indian River State College

Indian River State College (IRSC) in Fort Pierce offers more than 150 programs at the undergraduate level. IRSC was ranked among the top ten public regional colleges in the South by U.S. News & World Report for 2013. This school offers an accounting applications certificate. This 27-credit program includes courses on taxes, accounting software and economics. Additionally, the program covers financial, managerial and intermediary accounting principles.

Miami Dade College

Miami Dade College in Miami is the largest higher-learning institution in the nation, with more than 174,000 students attending its eight campuses. The school offers two accounting certificate programs. The accounting technology management certificate program includes courses that can be taken for college credit. The coursework explores business, taxes, microcomputers and management principles. The accounting operations certificate program teaches students skills in keyboarding, bookkeeping, business writing, tax preparation and more.

Seminole State College in Florida

Sanford's Seminole State College in Florida has more than 18,000 students attending each year. The school offers three accounting certificate programs that qualify for college credit. To earn the accounting applications technical certificate, one must complete a 27-credit program that readies students to pursue employment as bookkeepers, accounting assistants and more. An accounting operations technical certificate is available through an 18-credit program focused on math, Excel, accounting and microcomputer skills. Lastly, an accounting specialist technical certificate program is offered. This 12-credit program focuses on keyboarding, business math and communication.

St. Petersburg College

St. Petersburg College is a 4-year school in Clearwater. More than 30,000 students attend this higher-learning institution each year. An accounting technological operations certificate program is available at the school. The 18-credit program explores the preparation and organization of financial and business records. The coursework includes classes in computer applications and accounting software, as well as financial and managerial accounting. Students have the opportunity to participate in an internship.

Valencia College

More than 40,000 students attend Valencia College in Orlando each year. This 4-year school offers three accounting certificate programs. The 27-credit accounting applications certificate program includes courses in financial accounting, computer applications and business mathematics. An accounting operations certificate program is also available. In this 18-credit program, students learn about basic accounting and business principles as well as how to work with spreadsheets. Lastly, a 12-credit accounting specialist certificate program is available. It includes many of the same courses as the accounting operations certificate program.
