Loyola Marymount University
This university offers two undergraduate programs and a master's degree program in accounting. Applicants to the graduate program need to have a bachelor's degree and those who didn't major in accounting must take prerequisite courses in accounting, business and ethics.
Minor in Accounting
This program is only open to business students at the university. Students will need to take courses in financial accounting, intermediate accounting, income tax accounting and accounting info for decision making.
BS in Accounting
Undergrad majors will learn about the basics of accounting principles. The program teaches students about public, governmental or corporate accounting jobs. It will also help students prepare for Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) professional certifications. All students can participate in projects, oral presentations and team competitions. Specific courses include financial accounting, managerial accounting and cost accounting.
MS in Accounting
This graduate program has 30 units of coursework, and students will be able to prepare for the CPA licensure exam. Students will need to take courses like fraud examination, financial statement analysis, taxation of corporations/shareholders and estate/gift taxation. Students can also opt to participate in an accounting or tax internship.
University of Southern California
This university has both undergraduate and graduate programs for students who want to prepare for entry-level work or advancement in accounting. Applicants to the MAcc and Master of Business Taxation programs must have a bachelor's degree and acceptable GMAT scores. Students must also complete prerequisites in business and accounting. Students applying to the PhD program need to have a bachelor's degree and GRE/GMAT scores.
Minor in Accounting
Only non-business majors can complete this program. Its purpose is to help students understand basic business practices and how accounting affects their lives. Students will take courses in foundations of accounting, intermediate financial accounting, business economics and business finance.
BS in Accounting
Three tracks are available for students: accounting, accounting information systems and graduate accounting. The general accounting track focuses on industry, government and non-profit organizations. The accounting information systems track focuses on designing and using accounting technology. Students interested in pursuing additional education should take the graduate accounting track. All students will take foundation courses in topics like basic accounting, business communication, business finance and operations management. Major-related course topics may include financial reporting, managerial accounting, financial statement auditing and tax issues for business.
This program requires students to complete accounting, communications and ethics courses. Students will learn about the professional responsibilities and ethical behavior for accountants. Students also can choose courses like auditing/assurance services, advanced financial statement auditing topics, enterprise information systems and other related topics.
Master of Business Taxation
This program is similar to the MAcc degree, and students in this program are required to take courses in tax, accounting and business. Students also can choose electives like estate/gift taxes and methods of tax accounting. Floating electives may include varied topics in business and accounting. Required courses include tax research, tax theory, taxation of partnerships, corporate taxation and ethics for professional accountants.
PhD in Accounting
This 4-year doctoral degree program has disciplines in financial, auditing/corporate governance, tax and managerial accounting. Courses may include topics in tax planning, auditor independence, strategic management accounting and financial regulation. All students applying to this program are required to take screening and qualifying exams to ensure that they are fit to continue to the program. Students must also complete research, teaching assistantships and a dissertation.
Vanguard University of Southern California
This university provides one undergraduate program in accounting. Students will be prepared for accounting work in forensic, management and public fields.
BA in Accounting
In this degree program, students must take a mix of business, management, economics and accounting courses. The courses will help students understand the principles of marketing, business writing, computer applications and business math. Major-specific courses include intermediate accounting, advanced accounting, auditing and federal taxation.
