Associate of Applied Science in Accounting

The accounting program provides students with a basic background in finance. Course topics include inflation, interest, long-term capital budgeting, accounting systems and statement analysis. This program requires 64 credit hours to complete. While students pursuing an Associate of Applied Science do not have to fulfill the SUNY General Education Requirements, the accounting program does require courses in freshman English, basic math and public speaking. Students also have to take courses in business law, economics and statistics.

Along with learning how to execute the everyday activities associated with small business accounting, future professionals are taught how to collect, analyze and summarize computer-based and other financial information. Students may also have the option to transfer to four-year accounting programs.

Morrisville State College

The Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science in Accounting programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The programs are offered through the School of Business, and students have the opportunity to train with up-to-date software. Co-curricular activities include a college-based Accounting Society that provides students with the opportunity to participate in informal discussions with colleagues and faculty members and prepare for the school's Annual Professional Showcase.

Associate of Science in Accounting

The Associate of Science program is specifically intended for students who plan on transferring to a four-year college and are interested in careers as Certified Public Accountants. It requires the completion of 60 total credits, including 12 credits of general education courses. The business core covers topics in organization and management, business law, computer technology and statistics. Accounting courses include basic and managerial accounting, as well as one elective.

Associate of Applied Science in Accounting

This program is designed to prepare students for direct entry into the fields of accounting and business and includes a minimum of 15 credits of accounting coursework with the option to specialize in business management or computer information systems. Students can still transfer to a four-year program, but the school recommends that these students take elective courses outside of accounting.

Qualified graduates may be able to find work as budget, credit or cost control analysts, payroll auditors and tax examiners.

Onondaga Community College

The accounting program at Onondaga is a vocational course of study, and students who are interested in eventually pursuing a bachelor's degree in accounting should consider the Associate of Science in Business Administration.

Associate of Applied Science in Accounting

The accounting curriculum includes training in the use of common ledger software programs and electronic spreadsheets. Students also take courses in business law and economics. In addition to acquiring a background in the use of fair accounting practices and financial structures, students can also gain an adaptable skill set that can be used in the corporate or small business environment. They also learn how to work as a member of a team. Qualified graduates may be able to find entry-level work as account, audit or cost clerks, as well as junior accountants and tax trainees.
