Essential Information

Accounting technology programs are offered at the certificate and associate degree level in the state of Washington; some programs may be entitled accounting or bookkeeping. While graduates of these programs can work as accounting assistants or bookkeepers, transfer associate degree programs are available that will prepare individuals for enrollment in an accounting bachelor's degree. Programs may have flexible schedules by offering classes in the evening or online. In addition, some programs give students the opportunity to complete an internship.


Bellevue College

Bellevue College is located in Bellevue and features a certificate and associate degree related to accounting technology. Students have the option of pursuing a 31-credit bookkeeping certificate or 46-credit accounting assistant certificate.

Two accounting associate degrees are also offered. The 90-credit Associate in Arts program prepares students for employment, while the Associate of Science - Transfer program is designed for transfer into a bachelor's degree program. Courses in both programs include applied accounting, business payroll tax accounting, accounting information systems, practical accounting and managerial accounting.

Clark College

Located in Vancouver, students enrolled at Clark College can pursue an accounting clerk certificate or accounting associate degree. The certificate is 46-50 credits, and the associate degree is 90 credits. Students take courses in keyboarding, basic accounting procedures, accounting applications, computerized accounting and computer business applications.

Edmonds Community College

Edmonds Community College is based in Lynnwood and has accounting certificate and degree programs. The accounting - small business certificate is 30 credits and features courses in accounting fundamentals, business and payroll tax accounting, accounting software applications and business mathematics.

The accounting associate degree is 90 credits and combines accounting courses with two business internships. Students can also pursue an accounting associate transfer degree that prepares them to enroll at Central Washington University.

Everett Community College

Based in Everett, Everett Community College offers a bookkeeping certificate and accounting associate degree. The certificate is 50 credits, while the associate degree is 90 credits. Students can complete courses during the day, evening or online.

Green River College

Green River College is located in Auburn and has two accounting certificates and an accounting associate degree. The 15-credit accounting clerk certificate includes courses in practical financial accounting, business math applications and fundamentals of computers. Students in the accounting certificate are required to complete 40 credits.

The associate degree is 90 credits and includes courses in business math applications, keyboarding, business law, small business management, payroll accounting, individual taxation and practical accounting.

Highline College

Highline College is based in Des Moines, and students at the school can pursue three certificates and an associate degree in accounting. The bookkeeping certificate is 61 credits, while the accounting certificate is 47 credits. A 76-credit accounts receivable/payable certificate is also available. The associate degree in accounting is 101 credits.

Courses in these programs include practical accounting, business taxes, payroll accounting, income tax procedures and accounting principles.

North Seattle College

North Seattle College is located in Seattle and features several accounting programs. Students can pursue a 15-credit accounting achievement certificate, 15-credit accounting fraud certificate, 12-credit accounting office assistant I & II certificates and 35-credit advanced tax preparation certificate.

The accounting associate degree is 93 credits, and students take courses in accounting principles, business tax accounting, accounting information systems, financial management, Quickbooks, business law and economic statistics. The program also includes an internship.

Olympic College

Based in Bremerton, Olympic College has several programs involving accounting technology. The accounting clerk certificate is 49 credits and can be completed in one year. Students enrolled in the accounting technology associate degree are required to complete 90 credits and take courses in accounting principles, practical accounting, payroll accounting, individual taxation and taxation for business. The transfer associate degree is 91 credits, and the college has an articulation with Old Dominion University.

Pierce College

Pierce College is located in Lakewood and offers a certificate and associate degree in accounting. Students in the certificate are required to complete 40-43 credits, and the program consists of general education requirements and introduction and advanced accounting courses.

The accounting associate degree is 95-101 credits and includes courses in accounting systems, payroll and business taxes, auditing, accounting simulations and practical cost accounting. Electives offers students an opportunity to learn about small business planning, economics and supervision and leadership.

Tacoma Community College

Based in Tacoma, Tacoma Community College offers three accounting certificates and an associate degree. Students can pursue a 12-credit accounting office associate certificate, 15-credit assistant bookkeeping clerk certificate and 15-credit bookkeeping systems certificate.

The accounting associate degree is 90 credits, and in addition to an internship, students take courses in accounting principles, business law, Quickbooks and Excel.
