When looking for a way to change careers without spending too much money, adult education centers are the way to go. Based in Long Island, New York, and offering programs that take less than a year to a year to complete, these facilities supply an opportunity for students to try something new and obtain the skills necessary for entry-level positions.

Adult learners in Long Island, NY, can train for a career, enhance personal skills or prepare to earn a GED. Dozens of programs are available through several schools located throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, which make up Long Island. Many of these programs prepare adults to pursue professional certification or the license they need to become employed in their chosen fields. Program duration varies, with some consisting of only one or two courses and others lasting for several weeks or more. Some programs are devoted solely to senior citizens.

BOCES' Adult Education Programs

Adult Basic Education Program

Self-paced ESOL classes are available to adult students to help them improve their English speaking, reading, comprehension and writing skills. Citizenship is also covered.

Home Inspector Program

Students progress through a series of five modules to prepare to meet the requirements of the New York State Home Inspection licensing law and the New York State Home Inspector certification exam. In the final module, students participate in field experience.

EKG Technician Course

This course trains aspiring EKG technicians in the skills and techniques necessary for entry-level employment and to become certified. Students take courses such as anatomy and physiology, legal and ethical issues of patient care, medical terminology and electrocardiograph techniques.

Business Courses

Students can take courses in business office technologies, such as QuickBooks. Also available is a notary public workshop, which prepares individuals for New York State (NYS) certification in this field.

Long Island University's Adult Education Programs

The School of Professional and Continuing Studies at Long Island University offers adult programs for those interested in upgrading their existing skills and preparing for new careers. Programs are offered at several campuses throughout the region. Additionally, the school's Center for Creative Retirement provides senior adult education services, such as study groups, discussions and group trips to cultural centers in New York.

English Language Program

The English Language Institute provides programs for non-English speakers who wish to improve their English language skills for professional purposes. Programs are offered in semi-intensive, intensive and specific English skills.

Center for Creative Retirement Programs

Older adults can partake in seminars, field trips and study groups through the Center for Creative Retirement. Topics of exploration include presidential elections and books that shaped America. Real Estate Courses

The school provides online real estate classes in partnership with Career Webschool. Students can take New York real estate prelicensure classes, real estate continuing education and appraisal continuing education courses.

Ceramics Class

The Language and Creative Arts division offers a ceramics class for students at all levels. Students learn in a studio setting and receive instructions in plaster mold making, porcelain slip casting, glazing and firing.

New York City OACE's Programs

The New York City Department of Education provides over 900 courses and programs to students ages 21 and older who have not obtained a high school diploma or GED. They are recognized as having the region's largest adult literacy education services. Programs are offered at their four adult learning centers located throughout the city and are completely tuition free for eligible residents.

Microsoft Office Courses

Offered at the New York City Department of Education's Queens location, each of these five-month courses focus on a particular area of the Microsoft Office software and prepare students for the MOS certification. At completion, individuals will have a full understanding of how to organize spreadsheets in Excel, how to create new documents and presentations in Word and PowerPoint, as well as how to use them in a business setting.

Building Maintenance Program

Students in this program will discover the basics of maintenance for a myriad of careers. Courses include repairing doors and windows, maintaining electrical equipment, repairing vinyl tiles, and repairing simple leaks. This program will prepare students for the OSHA certification and is offered at the Manhattan campus.

Culinary Arts and Food Preparation

For those seeking entry level work in the culinary field, this program offers basic training in safety and sanitation skills. Other topics include measurements, baking/cooking methods, and equipment identification. Students will be eligible for a New York City Food Handler certification at the completion of this program, which is available at the Manhattan campus.
