Schools and Programs

Adult students in New Hampshire have many choices available for furthering their education. Programs include adult basic education, general educational development (GED), high school completion and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL). In addition, many of the centers provide opportunities for personal growth and enrichment. These programs are offered by adult learning centers across the state. Some programs are available online, and some may award students with a certificate. Two of these adult learning centers and some of their programs are outlined below.

Dover Adult Learning Center of Strafford County's Education Programs

The Dover Adult Learning Center provides opportunities for adult residents of New Hampshire to improve life and job-related skills, complete their high school education or partake in enrichment classes. In addition to the programs offered at the center, a number of online programs are available.

Adult Basic Education Classes

Students may choose from an array of courses to improve basic skills in reading, writing and math, some of which are offered for free. GED preparation classes and practice tests, as well as one-on-one tutoring, are also available.

English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) Courses

ESOL classes teach basic vocabulary through reading and writing. Classes are free and are held daytime or evening. A citizenship class, based on the United States of America citizenship application and test questions, teaches students about government, history and responsibilities of those residing in the U.S.

Arts and Crafts Courses

Various artistic topics and techniques are explored throughout the year. Class options include mosaic design, jewelry making and drawing, among others. Most classes are held in a workshop format.

Computer Classes

Microsoft Office classes are offered to students with basic computer skills. These are offered at various skill levels in Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word. Other courses include how to use Facebook or the iPad.

Adult Learning Center's Education Programs

The Adult Learning Center provides job training, general adult education and ESOL programs to those living in and around Nashua County, New Hampshire. The center also provides a family resource center to promote parental involvement, though opportunities are available for all family members.

General Educational Development (GED) Program

GED preparation classes cover five basic skill areas: reading, writing, math, social studies and science. A separate reading class is offered to students who just wish to focus on that set of skills.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program

ESOL classes are offered at the beginner, intermediate, and high intermediate/advanced levels. In addition to language skills, students learn about the traditions and culture of the U.S.

Computer Technology Program

Students take courses in basic keyboarding and common computer applications. Lessons cover Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Exeter Adult Education

Exeter Adult education is part of the SAU #16 public school system. In addition to offering adult students the education opportunities needed to earn a high school equivalent, this school offers courses that may teach students new skills and build upon existing ones useful in the workplace. Coursework is available in general education subjects, the English language, and various enrichment activities, among other areas.

Academic Skills Courses

The school offers courses to students that will help them improve their academic skills. These courses cover reading, writing, English and math. Students may take these courses to prepare for the HiSET (high school equivalency) exam.

College Transition Courses

These courses were put together to help students explore career options and training opportunities to prepare students for postsecondary education. Some of the courses also help students reinforce their academic skills so that they may succeed in college courses. Students may learn about biology, chemistry, algebra and other subjects. Another part of this program is helping students perform college searches and apply for financial aid.

There are a number of adult learning opportunities in New Hampshire, mostly offered by public institutions or school districts. These programs are designed to help adult students complete their secondary education, learn vocational skills and prepare for postsecondary training.
