California's adult school system is comprised of nearly 400 institutions. Programs and individual courses are generally offered through public school districts and community centers. Sacramento City Unified School District's Adult Education Program

Sacramento City Unified School District's adult school program has been in existence since 1854. Adult education classes are primarily offered at the Charles A. Jones Career and Education Center and A. Warren McClaskey Adult Center. A number of fee-based online classes are also open to adult learners.

Parenting Classes

Classes focus on basic parenting skills and the development of healthy relationships between parents and children. Subjects include positive discipline, sibling rivalry, and anger management.

High School Equivalency Program

The high school equivalency program, called HISET preparation, is designed to prepare students to earn the California High School Equivalency Certificate. Test prep classes cover science, social studies, math, reading and writing.

Adult Basic Education Courses

These courses provide assistance with rudimentary reading, writing, math and computer literacy skills. Courses typically prepare enrollees to earn their high school diploma or pass the GED exam.

Career Technical Education (CTE)

The majority of CTE courses offered are geared toward a specific career; although, HISET preparation is also available as a CTE course. Among the career training program options are automotive body repair, basic Cisco and A+ certification, court reporting and vocational nursing.

Online Career and Enrichment Courses

Many professional and personal enrichment courses are available online, including those in sales and marketing, business communication, project management, health and wellness, personal finance, and digital photography. Most courses have multiple start dates throughout the year.

Alameda Adult School's Adult Education Program

Alameda Adult School provides high school diploma and GED preparation programs as well as courses for non-native English speakers. All programs require learners to be at least 18 years of age.

Adult Basic Education (High School Diploma/GED Prep) Program

This program is designed to help learners develop literacy and math skills to successfully enter a high school diploma program and pass the GED exam. Students take courses, such as algebra, English, world history and biology. An elective community-based work experience class is also offered.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Courses

These classes are open only to residents of Alameda. Classes range from beginner ESL to advanced levels. A family literacy course for parents with children in the Alameda school district is also available.

Alameda Reads Program

Adults needing help with basic reading and writing can get one-on-one tutoring at no-cost. Tutoring is typically limited to once or twice a week for one hour.

Job Training/Placement Program

Free job training and placement is available to students of Alameda Adult School. Training is offered at the Cypress Mandela Training Center and Rising Sun Energy Center.

Torrance Adult School

Practically in existence since the early 1900s, Torrance Adult School operates as one of the most affordable adult education schools in Los Angeles. Classes take place at the Levy Adult Center, Hamilton Adult Center, and Griffith Adult center, each offering different course areas. Programs include ESL, career education, parent education, and those dedicated to older adults and community interests.

Career Education

This program offers courses in Microsoft Office applications, bookkeeping and accounting, and medical support vocations such as medical and dental assistance, billing and coding, terminology and anatomy, and pharmacy technology. Also offered are certifications in finance and business, Microsoft Office and QuickBooks.

Community Interests

Activities in this program are designed for personal growth and enrichment. Students can acquire skills in computers, home repair, parenting, and personal finance, as well as learn digital photography and video editing, languages, instruments, and fitness/exercise techniques, and they can partake in special interest classes. Two tours are also available.

Older Adults

People over age 55 may participate in this program, which includes classes in physical fitness, health and mental fitness, and yoga/chair exercises. One can learn meditation, dancing, aerobics, solo singing, brain workouts, and caregiver procedures.
