Master's degree programs in advertising and public relations are offered by 4-year schools in Massachusetts. These programs allow students to gain practical experience through internships and specialized coursework. Some programs may require or give students the option to complete a thesis.
This university has served the Massachusetts capital of Boston for more than 150 years. Students in the College of Communication can choose from the Master of Science in Public Relations and Master of Science in Advertising programs. The advertising program includes professional and thesis tracks, both of which require a two-semester internship at the school's student-run advertising agency called AdLab. Students in the professional track have more flexibility in choosing courses than those in the thesis option; concentration elective options include portfolio development, copywriting, interactive marketing communication and video campaign creation.
The public relations program begins with a series of core education courses, which include communication theory, financial and strategic management, and communication research. Students also get to select three electives from options like marketing communication, political campaigning and community relations. Although an internship is not required for this program, students are encouraged to participate in one.
Suffolk University began in Boston as a law school but expanded into the arts and sciences as far back as 1934. The College of Arts and Science offers a Master of Arts in Communications with a Public Relations and Advertising concentration. Students are required to take 12 course including web design, social media and campaign management. The program also gives students a chance to participate in an internship through one of the elective options.
Although a bachelor's degree is typically all that's required to enter the PR field, a master's degree can potentially lead to a higher salary and give workers from other fields the necessary education to pursue an advertising or PR career.
