The American School of Correspondence was established in 1897 and has since enrolled over three million students. The American School is located in the southern Chicago suburb of Lansing, IL, and it provides students with an alternative, flexible way of completing their high school education. The resulting diploma is accepted by both employers and colleges.

Courses at the American School are offered through distance learning. Students are allowed to enroll at any point during the year, and the American School doesn't have any entrance exams for courses. Programs of Study

Students enrolled at the American School study at home at their own pace and are allotted four years to complete their studies in one of two possible tracks with over 70 courses. For each program, the student must complete the full 18 units of credit to graduate, four and a half of which must be completed with the American School in order to receive a diploma.

General High School Track

The general high school track is appropriate for those wishing to earn their high school diplomas and receive training that may help in a career. Popular trade-related electives for this program include carpentry, auto systems, food study and home decorating.

College Preparatory Track

For those who wish to attend college after receiving their high school diploma, the American School offers a college preparatory track. The college preparatory curriculum emphasizes science, math and foreign language courses that may be required by colleges or universities.

Approximately 50,000 students worldwide are enrolled at the American School, many of whom are in the sports and entertainment fields and often have busy schedules that don't allow time for conventional schooling. Students receive credit for most previous high school classes successfully passed upon transcript review, except for any religion, music, driver's education, physical education or ROTC courses. Those who have been home-schooled may earn up to five units of credit toward their diploma by passing comprehensive exams offered by the American School.

The American School is regionally and nationally accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. It is also recognized as a non-public secondary school by the Illinois State Board of Education.
