Program Information for American School
American School is a regionally and nationally accredited high school in Illinois that offers self-paced distance education in the form of high school diploma programs and extra courses that transfer to a local high school for graduation. American School also provides college prep courses for students interested in attending a postsecondary institution following graduation. Students can enroll at American School at any time during the year.
To be eligible for graduation from American School, students must complete at least 18 units of credit in either the general high school program or the college prep program. Like traditional high schools, students have four years to complete their studies at American School. Since courses are self-paced, students may complete their studies in a shorter period of time.
General High School Program
The general high school program offers more than 70 academic and career-oriented subjects. Students are required to take English, algebra, essential mathematics, environmental science, literature, psychology, social civics, history, health and physiology, writing, speech and a career planning class. Students can also choose five electives from high school subjects that relate to the student's personal, educational and career goals. This program is geared toward individuals looking to enter the job market upon graduation or those seeking self-enrichment. Students enrolling in the general high school program can transfer credits earned from their previous high school.
College Prep Program
Students enrolled in the college prep program are required to take algebra, American and British literature, U.S. history, geometry, biology, social civics, essential mathematics, health and physiology, psychology, English, writing, a science elective and a career planning course. Students must also choose three electives that relate to their postsecondary educational goals and the specific entrance requirements at the college they plan on attending.
Students who need to make up missed credits prior to graduating at their home high school can enroll through their local high school in the independent study program at American School. All coursework is completed at home and does not interfere with the student's classes at his or her local high school. Once the program is completed, students can transfer credits earned in the independent study program toward a diploma at their local high school. The independent study program also offers day and evening classes in adult and continuing education. Over 70 subjects are available on a flexible schedule.
