Animation Schools in Kentucky with Degree Program Summaries

There are roughly seven schools within Kentucky that have animation-focused programs. Read an overview of these schools' programs, requirements and tuition info and find out which school is the right one for you.

Essential Information

Kentucky offers 55 public and private non-profit 2-year community and technical colleges and 4-year universities. Only seven of them have animation-focused training programs. In addition to concentration areas, programs might feature internships, cooperative experiences and practicum components. Students of some schools could study online.

Following are brief overviews of these seven schools' diploma, certificate, associate's and bachelor's programs, as well as a table comparing individual program offerings and tuition info. Students might enroll in programs such as:

Big Sandy Community and Technical College

Big Sandy Community and Technical College, located in Prestonsburg, offers an interactive multimedia diploma and a design and technology associate's degree program with an interactive multimedia concentration. Diploma program students encounter coursework in typography fundamentals, visual communication, webpage development, Flash techniques or 2-D animation, digital color therapy, drawing, concepts in graphic design and more.

The associate's degree program requires the same courses that are found in the diploma program, as well as additional general education classes and a portfolio development course. Both programs require students to participate in cooperative education, an internship or a practicum. Students can complete the diploma program by taking 54-57 credit hours, while the associate's degree program can be finished with 63-66 credit hours.

Eastern Kentucky University

Located in Richmond, Eastern Kentucky University provides a 4-year computer science bachelor's degree program that has an interactive multimedia concentration. Required courses cover topics like object-oriented and graphics programming, data structures, 3-D modeling and game engine design, software engineering and multimedia systems design. Additional courses can include technical graphics, artificial intelligence, database administration, marketing principles, system environments and operating systems.

Hazard Community and Technical College

Located in Hazard, this school offers three certificate programs with animation coursework, a multimedia diploma program with a concentration in multimedia and a multimedia associate's degree program with concentrations in animation and audio/video. The three certificate programs require 30-36 credit hours and focus on animation, multimedia or audio/video. These programs can cover 2-D and 3-D animation, multimedia audio and video, graphic design fundamentals, computer illustration, animation fundamentals, digital color theory and visual communication basics.

The multimedia diploma program entails at least 54 credit hours and includes courses in animation fundamentals, professional portfolio development, computer illustration, webpage design, 2-D animation, digital color theory and digital imaging. All associate's degree program participants find topics covering graphic design and strategic concepts, animation fundamentals, typography, visual communication basics, computer illustration, computer fundamentals and digital color theory. The animation concentration has training in 2-D and 3-D animation.

Audio/video concentration students complete courses in multimedia audio and video, in addition to 2-D animation courses. The diploma and associate's degree programs require students to obtain professional experience through an internship, a practicum or a cooperative education experience. To graduate from the associate's degree program, participants complete 63-66 credit hours of coursework.

Jefferson Community and Technical College

Animation and multimedia certificate programs can be found at Louisville's Jefferson Community and Technical College. The 33-credit hour animation program trains students in areas such as digital color theory, 2-D and 3-D animation, typography, multimedia video and audio, computer illustration, digital imaging and graphic design concepts. Multimedia certificate courses include digital imaging, graphic design concepts, visual communication basics, digital color theory, animation fundamentals, 2-D animation and webpage design. The multimedia certificate program takes 36 credit hours to complete.

Kentucky State University

A computer graphics and multimedia production technology associate's degree program can be found at Frankfort's Kentucky State University. Training prepares students for careers using computer-aided drafting, illustration, photography, industrial design, modeling, computer science and animation. At least 64 semester hours are required to graduate.

Somerset Community College

Somerset-based Somerset Community College offers an animation certificate program that must be completed entirely online. Coursework includes 2-D and 3-D animation, visual communication, Photoshop fundamentals, animation basics, computer illustration, color theory and graphic design basics. A total of 30 credit hours are needed to complete the program.

West Kentucky Community and Technical College

Paducah's West Kentucky Community and Technical College offers an animation certificate program, an audio/video certificate program, a multimedia certificate program, a multimedia diploma program and a multimedia associate's degree program. Diploma and associate's degree program students can concentrate their studies in animation and audio/video.

Depending on the certificate program and concentration, courses can cover 2-D and 3-D animation, multimedia audio and video, webpage design and digital imaging. Diploma and associate's degree program students are also educated in computer illustration, portfolio development, graphic design concepts, digital color theory, animation fundamentals and typography. Along with more general education courses than the diploma program, the associate's degree program requires a strategic concepts course. Diploma and associate's degree program students participate in hands-on training through an internship, a cooperative education experience or a practicum.
