There are approximately 113 public and private colleges and universities in South Carolina, but Clemson University is the only school in the state that has been identified by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) to have accredited master's degree programs in architecture. Another school option is Midlands Technical College, which has an associate's degree program in architectural engineering technology. Some of these degree programs may offer additional specializations within the main degree program.

Architecture students should expect to gain experience through studio and computer work. In addition, many architecture programs require the completion of research or design projects.

Clemson University

Located in Clemson, this 4-year university has numerous undergraduate and graduate degree programs in architecture. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Architecture program prepares students for the graduate-level programs necessary for professional architect licensure. Required courses include architectural history and theory, studio architecture work and technology. Some of the required courses in the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program examine how technology, design and history have shaped the field and how to use computer programs, such as AutoCAD, Photoshop and Illustrator, to create drawings and models.

The design-based professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program can be completed in 2-3 years, depending on the student's previous design experience. Courses address architectural history and theory, structures, research methodology and building technology. A concentration in architecture and health, which focuses on the design of hospitals and other health facilities, is available for M.Arch. students. The curriculum includes courses in health policy and administration, architectural programming, health facilities design and hospital design. Students work on individual projects in required studio classes.

In the Master of Landscape Architecture program, students focus on three areas of interest: health and design, urban and community design and landscape restoration. Depending on the student's education, this program could take 2-3 years. Master's students will propose and write a research project based on one of the department's focus areas.

The Master of Science in Architecture is a research-based degree that prepares students for doctoral programs. This program takes at least a year to complete and offers concentrations in architecture and health, community research and design and animated architecture. Clemson also offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Planning, Design and the Built Environment. The College of Architecture houses this interdisciplinary Ph.D. program, which offers concentrations in architecture and health; animated architecture; and design/build. This 3-year professional program has an innovative curriculum drawn from several academic disciplines, including architecture, environmental studies and health administration and policy.

Midlands Technical College

The architectural engineering technology program at this West Columbia college prepares graduates to become technicians who assist individuals such as surveyors, architects, planners and engineers in the design and construction of buildings. Students gain knowledge of basic architecture components such as site development, computer-aided design and drafting, contracts and construction methods. Practical experience is obtained through design projects.

Career Requirements

Architects seeking licensure in South Carolina must be registered with the state, which requires an architecture degree from a NAAB-accredited school, participation in the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards' Intern Development Program and the passing of the Architect Registration Examination.
