Beauty professionals, typically referred to as cosmetologists, perform a variety of services, such as hairstyling, skin care and makeup application. Cosmetology and aesthetician certificate programs are featured at a few public 2-year colleges in Arizona. They offer full- and part-time classes and prepare students for licensing. The programs take about one year to complete.
There are four public schools in Arizona that offer board-approved cosmetology programs, along with several for-profit schools that are not featured in this article.
East Valley Institute of Technology
Mesa's East Valley Institute of Technology offers cosmetology programs that begin every six weeks and take around two years to complete. Cosmetology students attend courses during evening hours on weekdays. The program also includes a fast-track option for students who want to complete the entire program in 12-15 months. Students receive hands-on training at the school's on-campus beauty salon, which offers hair, nail and skin treatments performed by students under supervision.
Eastern Arizona College
Located in Thatcher, Eastern Arizona College offers a cosmetology program that awards a certificate or associate degree. The cosmetology core curriculum is the same for both programs, and the certificate program can be completed in about one year. Students who want to earn an associate degree can complete 20 additional credits of general education courses. The cosmetology program requires full-time attendance. Eastern Arizona College offers certificate programs designed to train cosmetology instructors and nail technicians as well. Cosmetology refresher courses are also available, and all programs prepare students to become licensed in their respective area.
Maricopa Skill Center
Maricopa Skill Center provides career training in Phoenix and offers cosmetologist and aesthetician programs that result in a certificate. The cosmetology program can be completed in 55 weeks, and students have the option of attending courses on a full- or part-time basis during daytime or evening hours. In the comprehensive cosmetology program, students learn how to give haircuts and apply chemical treatments, along with styling hair and performing skin services. Focusing specifically on skin care, Maricopa Skill Center's aesthetician program can be completed in 22 weeks and prepares students for the cosmetology aesthetics licensing exam in Arizona.
Northland Pioneer College
Northland Pioneer College offers cosmetology instruction at three locations: Winslow, Show Low and St. Johns. The cosmetology program offers full- or part-time options and awards an associate degree or one of two types of certificates. Students can choose whether to include general education courses in their programs or focus strictly on cosmetology training. Northland Pioneer College also offers certificate programs in cosmetology instruction and nail technology. Students interested in the cosmetology instructor program need to be licensed cosmetologists with at least one year of experience to qualify.
All cosmetologists need a state license to provide beauty services. In Arizona, aspiring cosmetologists can earn a license through the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology by successfully passing both written and practical examinations. Prior to sitting for the examinations, an aspiring cosmetologist needs to complete a board-approved cosmetology program.
