The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and the Arizona State Board of Nursing approve nursing programs. Aspiring LPNs can pursue relevant training through undergraduate certificate programs in practical nursing, which may require completion of 28-47 credit hours and could be finished in a year. In addition, two-year programs in nursing are available at the associate's degree level. These programs typically prepare students to seek careers as registered nurses.
Arizona Western College
Located in Yuma, Arizona Western College's nursing program has been training professional nurses since 1967, when its first student was admitted. The college's 2-year program is approved by the Arizona State Board of Nursing and culminates in an associate's degree in nursing.
Arizona Western College offers a comprehensive 72-credit Associate in Applied Science in Nursing program that qualifies students to become licensed registered nurses or licensed practical nurses. Students interested in becoming practical nurses only need to complete the program through the third semester. After that, they receive a certificate and are eligible to become licensed. Courses in the program for LPN training include microbiology, pharmacology and human development. Before entering the nursing track, students must also complete pre-requisite courses, such as anatomy and physiology, chemistry, math and composition.
Chandler/Gilbert Community College
Students interested in becoming a registered nurse (RN) may want to consider attending Chandler/Gilbert Community College in Chandler. The associate's degree offered through the CGCC Maricopa Nursing Program prepares students for applying for the RN licensing examination offered by the State Board of Nursing. The curriculum includes structured nursing reviews, four nursing theory seminars and one clinical capstone project. In addition, students are able to choose from more than 100 agencies to complete required clinical experiences. CGC also offers a program that leads to a Certificate of Completion in Practical Nursing.
Eastern Arizona College
Students who want the skills to provide basic nursing care to acutely ill patients may want to consider the Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate of Proficiency available in Thatcher at Eastern Arizona College. This program requires a minimum of 47 credit hours, and admission requirements include previous coursework in chemistry, psychology, human anatomy and physiology. Students must also have a passing score on the standardized nursing entrance examination. Once in this program, students must complete courses in nutrition, pharmacology and nursing. Graduates are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN examination.
GateWay Community College
Both traditional and fast track practical nursing certificate options are available at GateWay Community College in Phoenix. Available on eight campuses, the practical nursing CCL program requires between 31 and 41 credit hours. Students can expect courses in nursing theory and science, as well as a practical nursing transition course. The fast track program requires 28 credit hours, with the curriculum focusing on advanced placement courses in nurse assisting and nursing theory. Students must complete all general education prerequisites before entering the fast track program.
Glendale Community College
Glendale Community College offers a Certificate of Completion in Practical Nursing that requires roughly 41 credit hours. Prerequisites to this program include courses in algebra, psychology, human anatomy and biology. Required courses focus on nursing theory and science, as well as a practical nursing transition course. Clinical requirements can be met at a variety of nearby locations, and graduates are prepared to sit for the national examination to become a licensed practical nurse.
Mesa Community College
Founded over 40 years ago, Mesa Community College enrolls a student population in excess of 25,000 and offers more than 180 programs of study that result in a certificate or 2-year degree. Notably, the college offers students a licensed practical nurse (LPN) certificate program. This program provides the necessary training to enable students to take the licensing examination for practical nursing. It is approved by the Arizona State Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Pre-requisite classes required for the LPN certificate program include human anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, algebra and microbiology. Specialized program courses include nursing science, nursing process and critical thinking, psychology and pharmacology.
Mohave Community College
Located in Kingman, Mohave Community College offers a Practical Nursing Certificate, and allows students participating in the associate's degree program to 'step out' and pursue direct employment as a practical nurse. This certificate program requires 32 credit hours that can be completed in a single year. Students can expect courses in gerontology, pharmacology, dosage calculations, family nursing and medical surgery nursing.
The AAS degree program in nursing at Phoenix College is designed to prepare students for careers as RNs. Participants can expect to complete between 61 and 74 credit hours to earn this degree and become eligible for the national nursing examination to become an RN. Required courses focus on nursing theory and science, as well as a nursing clinical capstone. This program is available at all eight of the Maricopa Community Colleges, and a variety of settings are available for clinical experiences. Students interested in working as LPNs can pursue a practical nursing certificate at Phoenix College as well.
Pima Community College
Located in Tucson, Pima Community College offers a Practical Nurse Certificate that students can earn by completing between 59 and 75 credit hours. Program requirements include the study of chemistry, anatomy, physiology and psychology. Students must complete four levels of courses on the nursing process, as well as support courses in microbiology, nutrition, human development and drug calculations. Two writing courses are mandatory as well.
Scottsdale Community College
Scottsdale Community College has an annual enrollment of roughly 11,500 students. The Practical Nursing Certificate prepares graduates for the necessary licensing examination provided by the Arizona State Board of Nursing. Required courses include 21 credit hours focused on nursing theory and science. In addition, students must complete a practical nursing transition course to earn the degree. The curriculum requires a maximum of 41 credit hours.
To become practical nurses in the State of Arizona, students must complete a program that has been state-approved and has earned national accreditation. After completing an approved educational program, graduates must apply to the Arizona State Board of Nursing in order to take the required licensing examination known as the NCLEX-PN.
