In 2011, OpenCourseWare celebrated its tenth anniversary with a conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a place many consider to be the birthplace of the OCW movement. OCW has been around a lot longer than many people think, but it's also continually growing, changing and expanding. The Best Emerging Initiative category highlights the most exciting new projects in the world of OCW. Our winner and finalists represent the best of what's next.
Not all Open Educational Resources are courses unto themselves. Some are great resources that can help students succeed in traditional classrooms, or just improve a self-learner's independent efforts. All of our nominees can make learning more engaging, accessible and fun. Read on to learn how.
One concern that often arises with OpenCourseWare is how to best simulate classroom interaction. Students learning online often don't have the same opportunities to engage with their peers and instructors that students in a traditional classroom do. The nominees in this category are improving the interactive quality of OCW for all learners.
The category of Best User Experience was a unique one. We actually had one school competing against itself for the prize! A positive user experience is a crucial part of any web initiative, and the nominees in this category have made an extra effort to make sure that their free educational resources are easy to navigate as well as informative.
In an age where YouTube eats up countless time and Netflix provides some of the highest amounts of traffic on the Web, streaming video seems to be where it's at. The nominees in this category all take real advantage of that technology to present users with a truly engaging learning experience.
Education accessibility is a cause near and dear to Study.com's heart. Breaking down barriers to education is what OpenCourseWare is all about, but the nominees in this category are going above and beyond to eliminate barriers based on cost, disability or learning style. We're excited to share the innovative efforts that the nominees in this category have made to increase access to Open Education Resources.
All three nominees in this category are constantly challenging the status quo, whether it's of the traditional college curriculum or the way people get their news. Learn about how our winner and finalists are breaking new ground in this already innovative field of education.
