Civilian Careers for Army 15T Veterans
Army 15Ts work on Blackhawk helicopters every day. They maintain and repair all of the systems and assemblies, testing and replacing parts from the electronics systems to hydraulics. This experience may be respected and could open doors for 15T veterans.
Industrial Machinery Mechanics
One advantage that UH-60 helicopter repairer veterans have over other candidates is their experience with many types of complex systems and assemblies within the Blackhawk helicopter. Their experience with different types of systems and technologies is broad, so they are not limited to a few functions. This may be an advantage in the civilian workforce.
Postsecondary education is not required to enter this profession. Industrial machinery mechanics work in many aspects of industrial production. They repair, install, and maintain processing machinery, as well as refinery and pipeline distribution systems.
Aircraft Mechanics and Service Technicians
This career may be an ideal fit for 15T veterans, because they already have experience with almost all of the required tasks. In addition, employers may take notice of any certifications earned or hours contributed to certification during active duty.
Aircraft mechanics and service technicians work on many types of aircraft, including planes and helicopters. They test, diagnose, and repair aircraft and assemblies, including hydraulic and pneumatic systems. They may also work on complete overhauls of the entire aircraft. This position does not require a degree, but postsecondary education, testing, supervised experience, and FAA certification are necessary.
One of the many duties of Army 15Ts is to prepare the Blackhawks for inspections. This may be regarded as a solid background on which to build a career as an aviation inspector.
Aviation inspectors don't need a college degree, although they do need specialized education, training, and certification. It's no surprise that aviation inspectors inspect planes and helicopters. But, they also inspect maintenance schedules and procedures, communications systems, navigation systems, and air traffic controls. It is their responsibility to ensure that aircraft meet all Federal regulations.
General and Operations Managers
This position requires strong communication skills, the ability to work with others both as a team leader and a team player, as well as the ability to analyze processes and suggest improvement. The ability of helicopter crews to coordinate and work together could be a plus in this field for 15T veterans.
General and operations managers take on a number of tasks and duties within a business, government agency, or other institution. They may participate with upper management at the policy level, as well as manage day-to-day operations of dedicated staff of departments. The unique aspect of this position is that it is not defined within a single area or department, but is broad-based and requires communication across departments up and down the company hierarchy. This position requires a bachelor's degree.
Veteran 15Ts may find that their experience working directly with complex military aircraft offers them a perspective that is useful to the design and engineering process. This could lead to opportunities within this field.
Aerospace engineers need at least a bachelor's degree in a related field. They design aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, and missiles. In this process they also supervise the creation of prototypes, simulated and physical, in order to test their designs. They may work primarily in research and design, or manufacturing, within the aircraft industry.
