Essential Information

Online diploma programs in appliance repair are extremely rare. Most technicians receive their education through on-the-job training or campus-based diploma programs. However, students can find some entirely online or hybrid programs in the subject. Programs may have on-site training and/or on-campus courses. These programs prepare graduates for entry-level positions as appliance maintenance and repair workers. The coursework often also incorporates heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) training. Students in online diploma programs will need to complete practice activities on their own.

Diploma in Appliance Repair

The coursework incorporated into an online appliance repair curriculum includes working with motors and testers and understanding electrical appliances. Most of these programs take 3-12 months to complete.

Program Information and Requirements

Given the hands-on nature of the field, most appliance repair diploma programs are offered on campus. The few online programs that are available allow students to learn core skills on their own time, but in-person training sessions aren't included. Some schools offer programs in hybrid formats; students can take general education courses online but must complete core classes in person. Regardless of format, schools may offer career guidance and job placement assistance in addition to educational instruction.

List of Common Appliance Repair Classes

Classes in appliance repair examine both residential and commercial appliances. In addition to understanding these appliances, students learn about tools, safety on the job and the science behind electricity. Some programs focus exclusively on air conditioning and refrigeration.

Electricity Basics

This course gives students an introduction to electricity and explores the circuits and wiring used in appliance repair. Students also learn the various electrical symbols used by professionals. Ohm's law is often analyzed and discussed.

Air Conditioning

In this class, students examine air conditioners, as well as heat pumps, air purifiers and dehumidifiers. Students learn how these appliances operate and how to best service machines in need of repair. Both mechanical and electrical components of machines are considered. Hands-on training is a course requirement in on-campus and hybrid programs.

Commercial Appliance Repair

Some classes are dedicated exclusively to commercial appliances, including HVAC systems and refrigerators. In campus-based and hybrid programs, hands-on practice is a major component of these courses.

Career Information for Graduates

Appliance repair technicians can find work with small appliance stores or large retail chains; they can also start their own businesses. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that job opportunities for home appliance repairers will decline two percent from 2018-2028. Though most positions only require students to have high school diplomas, candidates who have completed formal education beyond high school may have the best employment opportunities. The BLS reported that as of May 2018, home appliance repairers receive an annual mean wage of $41,020.

Continuing Education

To advance in the profession, some appliance repair technicians seek voluntary professional certification. By successfully passing a certification exam, technicians can earn the Master Certified Appliance Professional credential offered by the Professional Service Association.

Some technicians need to obtain licensure in order to work in certain maintenance fields. For example, the BLS states that repairers who work with refrigerants must be licensed by the Environmental Protection Agency. Technicians need to pass an exam to receive their licenses.

Online programs in appliance repair may combine on-campus training and courses with online courses to teach students to repair a variety of appliances. Certification is available, and some fields require technicians to obtain a license.
