Mar 03, 2020

Adult education programs are available to train students in architectural drafting and design. Learn about some common course topics and program facts to get a preview of this kind of education.

Program Information

Career centers and technical schools offer drafting and design programs for students interested in studying architectural drafting and design. While it is not required, adult students with a previous degree or experience in the field can receive preference for admission. Depending on the school, students may engage in anywhere from 900 hours to nearly 2,000 hours of study in order to complete their respective programs. Students will design architectural drawings and floor plans while learning various ordinances and building codes. Upon completion, students should be qualified to earn National Skills Certificates to demonstrate their abilities to future employers.

What Do Architectural Drafters and Designers Do?

Architectural drafters and designers draw sketches and schematic diagrams of architectural features for buildings using computer-aided drafting (CAD) techniques. Drafters draw floor plans, residential housing, and structural features of commercial buildings according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) drafting standards.

Architecture Drafting and Design Program Information

The curriculum for an architecture drafting and design program typically includes basic courses in architectural computer aided drafting (CAD). Different construction methods, drawing techniques, and more are covered over the course of the program. Students will have the opportunity to learn beside industry professionals as they practice software design techniques. Advanced techniques for civil and architectural drawings will round out a student's skills and knowledge in preparation for certificate completion and future employment. Some programs may require AutoCAD software be downloaded to a student's own computer (at no cost), while others may provide the software at on-campus facilities for students to use.

Salary Information and Career Outlook for Architectural Drafters and Designers

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that architectural and civil drafters earned an average annual salary of $56,700, as of May 2018. Drafters can expect a little or no change in job growth from 2018 to 2028.

Certificate programs for adult learners in architectural CAD design and technology are common at many colleges and universities around the country. Completion of these programs equips students with the skills to work in architecture and construction.
