Architectural Draftsman License Information

Licensure is not mandatory for becoming an architectural draftsman; however, advancement into an architect position does require licensure. Requirements for licensure vary according to state, but generally include a professional architecture degree from a school accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. In 2015, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported annual mean salaries of $53,470 for architectural and civil drafters and $82,850 for architects. From 2014 to 2024, the BLS predicted job decline of 3% for architectural and civil drafters, while architects could look forward to average growth of 7% during that same time period.

Certification is preferred for architectural drafters. The Drafter Certification Examination establishes relevant knowledge related to the principles, theories and process involved in drafting. Licensing is not mandatory for drafters.
