Arlington is not incorporated, but it's been identified as a census-designated place (CDP) for statistical purposes. In 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population of Arlington at 207,627. In 2010, nearly 72 percent of Arlington residents identified as white alone, with almost 10 percent identifying as Asian alone, nearly 9 percent as black or African American alone and more than 15 percent as Hispanic or Latino. For the period 2010-2014, 72 percent of Arlington residents aged 25 and above had a bachelor's degree or higher; this compared to a statewide average of nearly 36 percent and a national average of about 29 percent.
Arlington is perhaps best known as the home of the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery. The Marine Corps Memorial is also in Arlington. Popular attractions in nearby Washington, D.C., include the Capitol Building, Smithsonian Institution, Washington Monument and White House.

Marymount University in Arlington confers bachelor's through doctoral degrees. A private school with an enrollment of just over 3,400 students as of Fall 2014, Marymount was ranked the 53rd best regional university in the South by U.S. News & World Report in 2016.
The Institute for the Psychological Sciences (IPS) also is located in Arlington. This private graduate school awards master's and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology and had an enrollment of about 100 students as of Fall 2014.
There are dozens of colleges and universities located within a 15-mile commute of Arlington. These include a variety of 2-year and 4-year schools, like Northern Virginia Community College, Georgetown University, Howard University and Gallaudet University.
