While an Associate in Administrative Assisting degree may not be available, students can earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or an Associate of Arts (AA) in Administrative Assisting.

Essential Information

AAS and AA in Administrative Assisting programs prepare students to enter the administrative workforce with basic secretarial and clerical skills. They offer courses in organization, general office administration, communications and information management. Training in the use of spreadsheets, database management, presentations and desktop publishing is also typically provided. These programs take two years to complete, and applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.


Associate's Degree in Administrative Assisting

An associate's degree program in administrative assisting typically includes courses that help students learn general office-related skills, the importance of good work habits, responsibility, and ethical behavior in the workplace. Courses may include:

  • Keyboarding
  • Accounting
  • Word processing
  • Microsoft applications (Word, Access, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Customer relations
  • Business communications

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that secretaries and administrative assistants (except executive, legal and medical secretaries) made a median annual salary of $36,630 in May 2018 (www.bls.gov). At this same time, executive administrative assistants and executive secretaries earned a median annual income of $59,340. The BLS also predicted that employment of administrative assistants and secretaries would decrease by 7% between 2018 and 2028. The personal care and service sector is expected to experience the greatest growth in administrative assistant positions from 2018 to 2028.

Continuing Education

Graduates of this program may continue their education by obtaining a bachelor's degree in a related field, such as business administration. Certifications for professionals with specific skills are also available. For example, the International Association of Administrative Professionals offers the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) credential to those demonstrating proficiency in office-related skills.

Through AAS and AA programs in administrative assisting, students gain the general education and technical training they need for entry-level office work. Graduates can also choose to pursue further education or certification.
