AAS in Computer Electronics: Degree Overview

Students who want to learn about computer electronics may pursue an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Computer Electronics Technology or Electronics and Computer Technology.

Essential Information

These AAS programs cover the fundamentals of digital electronics, computer systems, programming and data communications. Students learn to install, manage, use and troubleshoot computers, electronic devices and networks. Specialization options include software systems and industrial electronics. Applicants to these two-year programs must have a high school diploma or the equivalent, and they need to have completed one year of high school algebra.

Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree Programs

Much of the curriculum focuses on how the internal components of computers and electronics work. Courses also typically cover technical mathematics and physics. Other topics of study may include:

An AAS program can prepare students for entry-level computer, network and electronics technician positions, as well as computer and software support roles. Graduates may hold job titles such as PC and network specialist, installation specialist, applications programmer, technical salesperson, microcomputer technician, and computer support specialist.

Job Outlook and Salary Info

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), computer support specialists are expected to see a 10% increase in employment from 2018-2028. As of May 2018, the BLS reported that computer network support specialists earned a median annual salary of $62,770, while computer user support specialists earned a median annual salary of $50,980 for the same time period.

Continuing Education and Certification Information

Graduates may enroll in bachelor's degree programs in electrical engineering or computer engineering. Those who want to pursue advanced study can obtain a master's degree in electronics and computer technology or in an engineering field. Doctoral programs specializing in electrical and computer engineering also exist.

Graduates who prefer earning certifications or need them for their careers can pursue the Certified Electronics Associate certification, available through the Electronics Technicians Association, and Certified Electronics Technician certification, available through the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians.

Even though there are no AAS programs offered specifically in computer electronics, there are two very similar programs that provide adequate technical training for aspiring information technology professionals who want to start with entry-level work, transfer to bachelor's degree programs or attain professional certifications in the field.
