Continuing Education Information

The BLS said that aside from having an associate's degree, it is also advantageous for medical records technicians and medical records specialists to obtain credentialing through healthcare industry professional organizations (www.bls.gov). The Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential is conferred through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), and it is awarded to individuals who have earned associate's degrees from appropriately accredited programs and pass the credentialing exam (www.ahima.org).

Additional specialized certifications are available for medical coders and cancer registrars, the BLS said. The BLS also noted that additional education, such as a bachelor's or master's degree, can lead to career advancement in health information management occupations.

Students in an ABA in Health Information Technology program are trained in both business practices and medical terminology. This prepares them for entry-level careers in fields such as medical coding, insurance, or as a health information clerk.
