A.S. programs in interdisciplinary studies allow students to work with advisers to create their own plans of study that best suit their career goals. Numerous community colleges, universities and colleges offer this degree program, and prospective students can research departments within the school to ensure desired fields of study are offered. Most programs take two years to complete. Applicants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent. Once enrolled, students must complete the core requirements prior to graduation.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employers look for candidates with good communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are sharpened by liberal arts courses.

Possible jobs can include sales associates and teacher assistants. The BLS projects that both of these career fields will grow about as fast as average over the 2014-2024 decade. In May 2015, the BLS reported that teacher assistants earned a median annual salary of $24,900, and retail sales associates earned a median annual salary of $21,780.

Continuing Education Information

Some or all credits from an Associate of Science degree program may transfer to a 4-year college. Bachelor's programs in interdisciplinary studies are available and may require students to present a statement of their proposed plan of study. Students can also pursue graduate degrees in interdisciplinary studies at the master's and doctoral levels.
