ASB in Medical Office Administration programs are designed to prepare students for entry-level business positions in the medical service industry. While in the program, students learn to schedule patient appointments, coordinate patient care and relay messages among doctors, patients, and staff. They also learn about medical transcription, medical record management, insurance coding, billing and bill collections. Prior to graduation, students must complete an internship. Most programs take 12 to 18 months to complete.


Associate's Degree in Specialized Business in Medical Office Administration

Students in this program can expect to take courses that develop basic office and computer skills, such as computer fundamentals. They will also study medical terminology and anatomy and physiology in order to communicate with their colleagues and patients. Additional courses in this degree program may include:

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expected employment for medical secretaries to grow by 21% from 2014-2024, much faster than average for all occupations, spurred by expanding access to healthcare and the growing number of people becoming eligible for Medicare and Social Security coverage. The median annual salary for medical secretaries was $33,040 as of May 2015, the BLS reported.

Continuing Education and Certification

Medical secretaries generally learn new skills through on-the-job training, according to the BLS, and most advance through promotions to positions with more responsibility. Joining an organization, such as the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and taking advantage of its continuing education programs can help in career advancement. The NHA also offers the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) designation to professionals who meet education and experience qualifications and pass an examination.
