Liberal studies programs let students who may not be sure what careers they're interested in pursue a generalized education. Students of these programs have the opportunity to explore possible career opportunities while gaining a solid general education background. Programs are commonly offered through 2-year community colleges. Completion of an A.A. in Liberal Studies program will allow students to enter 4-year degree programs at colleges or universities, where they can major in subjects like nursing and education, just to name a few options.
Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies
Many programs in liberal studies allow students to design their own program of study, but common requirements include art, biology, physics, social sciences and humanities courses. Additionally, since many of the classes fulfill general education requirements, some schools allow the credits to be transferred to bachelor's programs at the same institution or an affiliate school. Some core courses usually required in this degree program include:
- College composition
- Intro to sociology
- Intro to philosophy
- College mathematics
- Critical thinking workshop
- Public speaking
When students earn an Associate of Arts in liberal studies, they are getting a general education that can be completed in a two-year time period. Upon completion of this degree, students will be able to use this foundational degree and apply it to just about any other advanced degree.
