Essential Information

Students who want to study accounting at the associate's degree level can earn an Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science in the field, or they can pursue an Associate of Business Administration with a concentration in accounting.

In these two-year programs, students learn fundamental business practices, focusing on finance, cost accounting and introductory and intermediate accounting processes. Students gain expertise in business records, financial statements, profit procedures and tax reports. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and demonstrate strong math and analytical skills.

Employment and Salary Information

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the employment of accountants and auditors from 2014-2024 is expected to increase by 11%, which is faster than the average. The BLS also states that in May of 2015, the mean annual salary for accountants was $75,280, and that most accountants have at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.

Although it is not possible to enroll in an ABS program in accounting, there are plenty of associate's degree options for interested students. After graduating, students can start work in the field, but they may improve their career prospects by pursuing higher level studies.
