Essential Information

A select few PC repair associate's degree programs are available fully through distance learning. However, these programs may require students to take proctored exams at approved locations near their home. Individuals can also find hybrid programs that offer some core computer classes online as part of the curriculum.

To earn the associate's degree, students will take courses in PC operating systems, software and computer applications. They will also develop troubleshooting techniques and learn about database technology, networking and Internet security. Applicants must hold a high school diploma and have successfully completed advanced math courses.

Associate's Degree in PC Repair

Online associate's degree programs in PC repair prepare graduates for work in a technical support role. These programs teach students basic and advanced technical information ranging from computer terminology and e-mail to information security and network installation.

A high school diploma and perhaps a couple of advanced math courses are generally the basic entry requirements. Similar online associate's degree programs that cover the same content include PC maintenance and computer support specialist.

Information and Requirements

Course delivery and online communication methods of a PC repair program vary by school but may include live video streaming, conference calls or chat room postings. Due to the technical nature of the coursework, e-mail is paramount for student-teacher interaction. Some programs offer a hotline for students with questions. Online courses can typically be completed at an independent pace.

Course Topics

Like traditional associate's degree programs, general education courses, such as composition and algebra, are necessary graduation requirements. Aside from the general education and core classes, there may be electives, and some programs require an internship.

Introduction to Computer Information Systems

This course provides fundamental classroom and practical instruction on information technology as it relates to business and personal use. Common course topics include the Internet, spreadsheets, computer hardware and database management.

Windows Operating Systems

Students are exposed to various Windows components, such as Windows Messenger and Internet Explorer. They also learn about how to create, organize and manage files and folders on the Windows platform. Additionally, students learn how to troubleshoot and use the various versions of Windows.

PC Hardware

Computer memory, multimedia drives and disk drives are some of the topics discussed in this course. The installation and maintenance of these components are also addressed.

Career Information

Graduates with an associate's degree from a PC repair-related program could pursue entry-level positions, such as a help desk technician or computer support specialist. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that an associate's degree may be sufficient for some computer support specialist positions; however, employers generally prefer a bachelor's degree. The BLS predicted that employment for these specialists would grow by 10% between 2018 and 2028. The average annual salary for this position was $55,050 in 2018.

Continuing Education Information

Since the BLS states that employers may seek computer support specialists with a bachelor's degree, there are many options for graduates. Computer support-related majors may include information technology or computer information systems. All of these options are available online.

There are both fully online and hybrid associate's degree programs in PC repair, both of which offer a basic overview of computer operating systems and the common methods for solving hardware and software problems. This training prepares graduates for entry-level technology support positions or advancement to a computer-focused bachelor's degree program.
