Students in Associate of Science (AS) in Medical Assisting programs learn the administrative and clinical skills needed to become medical assistants in doctors' offices, clinics and hospitals.

Essential Information

Students in AS in Medical Assisting programs take medical skills courses, as well as general education courses such as algebra and English composition. Students learn through classes, labs and clinical practice. They may also be required to complete internships. Most programs take 16 months to two years to complete. Applicants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent.


Associate of Science in Medical Assisting

A medical assistant program provides students with a blended curriculum of medical and administrative courses. Some of the courses offered in the program may include:

Continuing Education and Certification Information

The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the American Medical Technologists (AMT) both offer voluntary certification exams, and medical assistants can also obtain certification in a specialized area, such as optometry or podiatry. Associate's degree holders may subsequently enroll in bachelor's degree programs in fields such as healthcare administration or nursing.

By earning an AS in Medical Assisting, students build the basic healthcare skills they need for work in the field. The job growth for all medical assistants is expected to be faster than average from 2014-2024, so career opportunities for graduates of associate's programs should be good. Graduates can further boost their employment options by earning voluntary certification.
