Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) groups automotive air conditioning technicians into the same category as general automotive service technicians and mechanics. The BLS notes that employment among all of these technicians was expected to decrease by 1% between 2018 and 2028, which is about average compared to all career fields. The median salary among automotive service techs as of 2018 was $40,710.

Certification Options

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) offers voluntary certification for automotive repair technicians. It provides certifications in different specializations of the field, including automotive heating and air conditioning. Technicians must pass a test offered by ASE before they can receive the specialized certification. ASE also has a 'refrigerant recovery and recycling' program. The program is geared towards automobile air conditioning technicians and complies with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines. Students who pass the online quiz become certified.

Automotive air conditioning training teaches students to repair and install air conditioning and heating units in variety of vehicles through hands-on training. Additional voluntary certifications through ASE allow aspiring technicians to verify their skills to potential employers.
