Essential Information

The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) doesn't recognize the 4-year B.A. in Architecture as a professional degree, but this type of program can prepare graduates to pursue a NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture program. Some programs may allow students to select a specialization or concentration area within the major, such as building performance or architectural representation. Prospective applicants need to have a high school diploma or its equivalent to be eligible for the bachelor's degree program in architecture.

Bachelor of Arts in Architecture

The curriculum requires students to develop skills in critical-thinking and problem-solving as well as complete general education requirements. Potential course topics within the major may include:

  • Architectural design
  • Structural concepts
  • History of architecture
  • Construction methods
  • Modern and environmental design

Popular Career Options

Graduates who go on to earn a Master of Architecture from a NAAB-accredited program can become licensed architects, but individuals with only a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture don't qualify for state licensure. Instead, they may find entry-level employment within architectural and related industries. Some possible career titles are:

  • Technical illustrator
  • Architectural historian
  • Building researcher
  • Industrial designer

Continuing Education

A Bachelor of Arts in Architecture program supplies the foundation for a career in architecture. Individuals who aspire to professional positions will be required to continue their education by obtaining a Master of Architecture degree. The National Architectural Accrediting Board also accredits Doctor of Architecture programs.

A B.A. degree program in architecture trains students in subject such as architectural design, structural concepts, and the history of architecture. Graduates must continue on to a master's degree for accreditation by the NAAB.
