BS in Business - Hospitality Management: Degree Overview

Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) programs in hospitality management are uncommon, but Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) programs in this major are readily available.

Essential Information

Most four-year BS and BSBA programs in hospitality management are offered by business departments and provide students with a foundation in business along with a liberal arts background. Students who choose one of these programs might select additional specialized coursework, such as food and beverage operations, large and small lodging, and large-scale event planning, which might focus on trade shows, tourism and concerts. Many programs require internships or work study components so students can gain real-life experience and exposure to the industry. Program admission typically requires a high school diploma or GED, and applicants must submit ACT or SAT scores.

Popular Career Choices

Strong people skills and the desire to manage human resource activities such as hiring, training and managing employee and client safety issues are all important in a hospitality management career. Graduates are equipped to oversee operations in hotels and motels, convention centers, food and beverage establishments, cruise lines and recreation facilities. Large hotel and restaurant chains may require new hires to participate in a management trainee program. Some examples of entry-level management positions include:

  • Meeting and convention planner
  • Food service manager
  • Lodging manager
  • Gaming supervisor
  • Housekeeping manager

Salary and Job Outlook Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, lodging managers had an average salary of $57,810 as of May 2015; gaming supervisors earned $50,130; and meeting, convention and event planners earned an average of $51,200. Employment of meeting, convention and event planners is predicted to increase by 10% from 2014 to 2024, while jobs for food service managers are expected to increase by 5% during that time frame.

Continuing Education

Graduates desiring additional career advancement opportunities may pursue a master's degree in hospitality management or another specialized field. This will generally require 2-4 years of additional study that may include an internship. Knowledge of foreign languages is desirable and may provide additional career opportunities.

By earning a bachelor's degree in hospitality management, students get both a general education and theoretical and practical training in the hospitality industry. Graduates are ready for management positions in the field.
