Essential Information

Four-year web design and multimedia programs are available as fully online programs that don't require any on-campus classes. Students complete courses in interactive design, animation and motion graphics, as well as submitting a final portfolio. Students may have the opportunity to complete hands-on training through an internship. Students may need to purchase creative and multimedia software, like the Adobe Creative Suite, and hardware, like a digital camera or scanner.

Bachelor's Degree in Web Design and Multimedia

These programs cover a variety of skills and concepts, such as interface and usability design, typography and various digital art forms. Students can refine their drawing skills as well as learn to write scripts and create storyboards. They experiment with page layouts incorporating audio, video, text and color to create compelling websites.

Programs may culminate in either a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree or a Bachelor of Science degree, depending on the school. These programs are typically found at private and for-profit institutions. Public or not-for-profit schools may have similar programs that touch on some of these aspects.


These online programs can vary in the number of classes they require - from as few as 132 credit hours to as many as 180. Course content is delivered via textbooks, online lectures, multimedia presentations and online discussions. These programs do not require any in-person or on-campus work.

Often, there are minimum system requirements students must meet, and a high-speed Internet connection is strongly encouraged. Some software programs that students may need to purchase are Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Flash. Hardware required might include a digital camera, color printer, color scanner and CD burner.

Courses for these programs prepare students for careers as both artists and web design techs. Below are some examples of typical classes for this degree.

Interactive Design

This type of class teaches how to put together an interactive multimedia project using industry-specific software and hardware. Students practice integrating video, audio and motion graphics in addition to using web language code, like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Skills such as prototyping and wire framing may also be covered.


This type of course may cover both 2D and 3D animation skills. Students work with computer animation and modeling software. They may create motion graphics for different platforms, such as the web, mobile and broadcast.

Typography and Design

This type of course may focus on the effective use of fonts in conveying meaning, emotion and intention in text-based media. This course may also cover the design and production of print materials.

Career Information

With a bachelor's degree in web design and multimedia, graduates can seek jobs as interactive/web, visual, graphic or animation designers. With experience, they may be able to advance to positions like art director, creative director or producer.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that the graphic design field would continue to become significant in marketing products during the 2018-2028 decade, with a 3% growth expected. It stated that the odds of landing a position would be more favorable for those with experience in animation and website design. In 2018, the BLS estimated that the median salary for multimedia artists and animators was $72,520, for graphic designers was $50,370 and for art directors was $92,780.
