Ballet Schools and Classes: Information for Adult Learners

Dec 14, 2019

A small number of schools have bachelor's degree programs in ballet for individuals who aspire to become professional ballet dancers, choreographers or dance instructors. Independent studios, recreational organizations and dance companies also offer adult ballet classes geared towards dancers.

A select number of accredited 4-year schools offered bachelor's degree programs in ballet, but many more schools have general majors in dance (nces.ed.gov). Several independent studios and community recreation centers also offer ballet classes to the interested public.

  • Research the on- and off-campus performance opportunities for students, as well as summer programs offered by the school.
  • Check that a school has suitable floors, mirrors, mats and sound systems, according to standards set by the National Dance Council of America.

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Ballet

The BFA in Ballet is a fine arts program designed to train students for a professional career as performing artists or dance teachers. These 4-year programs focus on performance and choreography. Public performance opportunities may include both national and international tours.

Ballet Classes for Adult Learners

Adult ballet classes can be taken for fitness and enrichment through various organizations and dance companies around the country. Typically, sessions meet once a week for 4-8 weeks. Tuition can be flexible and may be paid by the class in some cases.

Students hoping to become professional ballet dancers can enroll in bachelor's degree programs in general dance that provide relevant training, while adult learners in search of less intensive training can take standalone classes in ballet.
