Professional Resume Writers

Professional resume writers compose or revise resumes for job seekers. A resume is a written summary of a job seeker's accomplishments, experience, and education. Resume writers aim to clearly present a candidate's professional achievements and work experience in the best possible light, thus distinguishing him/her from other applicants. They may correct spelling or grammar mistakes and format resumes to highlight important information. Resume writers are often self-employed and work on a freelance basis, typically in a home office, where they spend many hours looking at a computer monitor. They must continuously look for new work and often deal with the stress of managing multiple projects.

Step 1: Bachelor's Degree

A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a business-related area can help resume writers prepare for a career in the field. Courses in English and writing along with business and human resources can provide students with the necessary communication skills and a background in business. They can also help aspiring professionals acquire the skills they need to compose descriptive and engaging descriptions of a candidate's experience. Some professional resume writers specialize in a particular industry, such as healthcare or technology, so courses relevant to specific career fields are also beneficial.

Success Tips:

  • Complete an internship. Students may gain practical experience through business or human resources internships. Interns can strengthen their resume writing skills by participating in the hiring process and learning what recruiters look for in resumes.
  • Attend workshops. Some organizations and colleges offer resume development workshops, which may cover formats, objectives, references, and other aspects of a professional resume.

Step 2: Experience

Aspiring professional resume writers can begin by working with a career center or staffing firm, helping candidates and job seekers polish their resumes. They may also freelance with established resume writers. As they strengthen their skills and develop their client base, independent resume writers may be able to take on more complex projects. They may also be able to increase their rates and prepare resumes for candidates in a variety of fields.

Step 3: Certification

Organizations such as the Professional Association of Resume Writers (PARW) and the National Resume Writers' Association (NRWA) offer certifications for professional resume writers. Requirements may include a portfolio of resume and cover letter samples, a written exam that tests an applicant's knowledge of the resume writing industry, and a practical test using a theoretical client. Upon earning certification from PARW, a resume writer can choose to be listed on the association's directory of Certified Professional Resume Writers, a searchable database which connects them to more potential clients.

Just to recap, a bachelor's degree in communications, English, journalism, or business and a professional certification from the NRWA or PARW can help you pursue a career as a resume writer. The average annual salary for writers and authors in general in May 2015 was $69,130.
