School Information

Degree programs in biostatistics are found primarily at the graduate level and can lead to a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy Once enrolled, aspiring biostatisticians study statistical theory and analyze epidemiological data while preparing for careers in academia, research facilities, and government health agencies. Graduate programs in biostatistics combine courses in biology, mathematics, and informatics. The following schools are highly ranked and offer a great variety of degrees at the master's, doctorate, and graduate certificate level.

Duke University in Durham, North Carolina

The Biostatistics and Bioinformatics department at Duke offers four distinct graduate degrees: Master of Biostatistics, Master of Management in Clinical Informatics, Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Research, and Ph.D. in Biostatistics. The prestigious Master of Biostatistics program places an emphasis on analysis, communication, and biology. Students take courses in statistical theory and applied biostatistics methods. In addition to its impressive range of programs, Duke is also a highly regarded private school. It tied for eighth in U.S. News & World Report's 2017 list of top national universities.

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland

At Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health innovative research is preeminently stressed and a vigorous faculty-directed outline of study has been maintained. The school offers a Master of Health Sciences, Master of Science, and Ph.D. in Biostatistics. The 1-year MHS program in biostatistical theory and methods has been especially designed for professionals. The school's Ph.D. program prepares students for careers as researchers or biostatisticians. JHU was ranked the tenth-best national university by U.S. News & World Report for 2017.

Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

The Department of Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, and Biomathematics at Georgetown University offers a master's degree program, a Ph.D. program, and certificate program. Students in the master's degree program can choose between bioinformatics and epidemiology tracks. The program can be completed in one and a half years of full-time study and summer internships are strongly encouraged. The certificate program offers similar coursework, but is shorter. It can be finished in only two semesters of full-time study and does not require students to attend school during the summer. At the doctoral level, students take advanced coursework in topics such as probability theory and statistical inference and conduct research in the field. For 2017, Georgetown was ranked 20th among national universities by U.S. News & World Report.
