Although not common, online business Ph.D. programs are available. These programs can be found at a handful of schools, including Hampton University and Grand Canyon University. Students at most research-based doctoral programs must work closely with faculty members to develop their teaching skills and dissertation subject. To foster this collaboration, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs, including doctoral programs in business, are not commonly offered in a distance-learning format by public or private not-for-profit colleges in the U.S. Two exceptions are Hampton University and Grand Canyon University, which both offer online doctoral programs in business. Hampton University is highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report and Grand Canyon University offers a unique dissertation option.
In its 2016 ranking of American colleges, U.S. News & World Report placed Hampton University 18th among universities in the U.S. South and third among the nation's historically black colleges.
Hampton University's Ph.D. in Business program does not have teaching assistantships or other research work that require students to be in residence at the physical campus. The program is geared toward working professionals who want to pursue an advanced education in a part-time format while continuing their employment. Those who already hold a master's degree and are interested in academic or consulting careers are also encouraged to apply. Students without a master's degree in a relevant field must take nine credits of prerequisites in quantitative analysis, economics, and accounting before beginning their curriculum sequence.
The program's curriculum includes online courses taken during the fall and spring semesters. In addition, students must attend two on-campus residencies. Students earn 12 credits during each session, which lasts four weeks. After all required coursework has been completed with a grade of B or better, doctoral candidates begin their dissertation work. The final exam and submission of research topic are designed to be completed in the fall semester of the second year, after which students have three years to complete their dissertation.
Grand Canyon University
At Grand Canyon University, students are able to start working on their dissertations from the beginning of the program, which is a unique feature of the program. The online Doctor of Business Administration with an emphasis in management requires students to be on campus for two four-day, on-campus residencies. The program requires students to complete 60 credits, with courses that are generally eight weeks in length. Courses focus on management theory, business law, research design, and more.
