Each program is unique in its coursework, incorporating hands-on music production training. Upon its founding, the college placed emphasis on teaching jazz, but it has since expanded to include rock and hip-hop. Within the Steinhardt School, students can pursue a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in music technology. At the bachelor's level, students are exposed to recording technology, ear training, music theory, and acoustics. The master's and doctoral degree programs provide specialized concentration areas that focus on technological or computational aspects of music production. Dual-degrees are also offered in addition to internships and study abroad options.

Ball State University

At Ball State University in Muncie, IN, a bachelor's degree in music with a major in music media production prepares one for both the technical and professional aspect of the music industry. Students take classes in studio mixing and mastering, recording techniques, and production, among other related subjects. Music Media Production (MMP) students can take advantage of immersive learning and internship opportunities, and they also participate in emerging media productions. In addition to media studies, students must also pass a voice or instrument audition where they're encouraged to develop musical abilities.
