Boat Architecture Training and Degree Program Summaries

Oct 10, 2019

Essential Information

Boat architecture is also known as naval architecture or marine engineering. Bachelor's and master's degree programs in the field teach the mechanics, engineering and physics used to develop aquatic vessels for a wide variety of purposes. To enroll in the master's program, students must have an undergraduate degree and familiarity with applied and fluid mechanics. Applicants with prior work experience may have an advantage.

Bachelor's in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

Applicants to the bachelor's program must have a high school diploma or the equivalent. Bachelor's curriculum covers sea vessel design, construction and operation, and the engineering laws governing buoyancy, stability and strength requirements. Shipyard and building terminology is also discussed. Naval architecture and marine engineering bachelor's students gain scientific and practical ship design skills through courses in the following topics:

  • Introduction to naval architecture
  • Ship statistics
  • Small craft design
  • Marine dynamics
  • Ship structures

Master's of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

Master of Science (M.S.) in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering students learn about naval structure theories, marine systems handling, raw materials derivation issues and valuable mineral frontier navigation. Direct experience is gained through ship building and mineral gathering hands-on training. Master's-level courses are more scientifically advanced, covering subjects like:

  • Marine hydrodynamics
  • Ship power and propulsion
  • Design principles for ocean vehicles
  • Structural dynamics
  • Acoustics and sensing

Popular Career Options

Graduates are eligible for a number of roles in the boat architecture and marine engineering industry. Popular job titles include:

  • Boat architect
  • Marine engineer
  • Senior architect

Career and Salary Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for marine engineers and naval architects is predicted to grow at a rate of 9% between 2018-2028 with a mean annual wage of $98,970 as of May 2018.

Bachelor's and master's programs in naval architecture and marine engineering focus on sea vessel design, construction and operation, marine systems handling, and structural dynamics. Graduates of these programs can become boat architects, marine engineers, senior architects, or they can pursue other jobs in boat architecture and marine engineering.
