Job Description of a Brew House Supervisor

Most brew houses consist of a restaurant and on-site brewery, so brew house supervisors oversee the workers who serve and cook the food, as well as those who brew and serve the alcohol. Supervisors talk with customers to ensure they are enjoying their meals. Depending on the size of the facility, supervisors may be involved with marketing and promotions. For established franchise-chain locations, supervisors must maintain the company image through controlling the restaurant's atmosphere and enforcing company policies.

Brew House Supervisor Job Duties

Supervisors are responsible for finding, hiring, and training new workers. Some supervisors delegate training responsibilities to a team leader where there is more than one supervisor managing a different team, such as brewery workers, kitchen staff, and serving crew. In this case, supervisors would need to agree on team collaboration.

Like most management positions, a supervisor's duties include completing and submitting paperwork. Supervisors run inventory reports and account for items used. They are responsible for purchasing food items, brewery ingredients, and other necessary merchandise. Supervisors schedule shifts for employees and weekly meetings for team leaders. Supervisors make sure all the cash has been counted, logged, and deposited.

Another key duty includes dealing with disputes. For example, sometimes customers are unsatisfied with their meals and supervisors must apologize to the customer and offer compensation. Supervisors must also deal with employee disputes and reprimanding employees appropriately for misconduct.

In May 2018, the BLS reported that supervisors of servers and food preparation staff in the 90th percentile or higher earned $57,290 or more per year, whereas food service managers in the same percentile earned an annual median salary of $92,410. The top-paying states for staff supervisors in May 2018 included the District of Columbia, New Jersey, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Hawaii, stated the BLS. Comparatively, the top-paying states for food service managers in that same year were New Jersey, Washington, New York, Delaware, and Connecticut.

Brew house supervisors typically supervise bartenders, menus, servers, and cooks within a brew house. They often need to keep track of inventories, place product orders, and schedule shifts, and require strong leadership and communication skills. Positions similar to a brew house supervisor earned a median income ranging from about $32,000 to more than $54,000 in 2018.
