Possible Careers with a Degree in Architectural Engineering

Architectural engineering is a challenging career field that requires a strong grasp of calculus, geometry and physics. However, the field of architectural engineering isn't all just numbers and computations; students also usually must learn about art, design, history and the humanities, subjects that help them understand architecture on a broad basis and facilitate communication with other professionals, including lead architects.

Graduates of bachelor's degree programs in architectural engineering are prepared to enter a wide variety of fast-growing fields related to construction, design and planning. Those with a degree in architectural engineering may work as architectural engineers, engineering technicians and construction managers.

Architectural Engineer

Architects may envision a building's design, but architectural engineers, also called civil engineers, make these visions and plans come true by applying knowledge of engineering forms, ventilation, lighting, structural systems and building codes. New architectural engineers will be needed to replace those retiring or leaving the business. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual salary of a civil engineer was reported as $82,220 in May 2015, with the top ten percent of workers making $129,850 or more per year. The number of jobs for civil engineers was expected to grow 8% from 2014-2024.

Engineering Technician

Engineering technicians use their analytical skills in math and science to solve technical problems in a variety of design, construction and production-related fields. Some of their job responsibilities include research, development and production troubleshooting. According to the BLS, civil engineering technicians could see employment in their field increase by 5% from 2014-2024, due to increasing difficulty finding state funding for engineering projects. The median salary earned by civil engineering technicians in May 2015 was $49,260, per the BLS.

Construction Manager

Construction managers are responsible for the planning, development and coordination of construction projects. They may be owners of a company or salaried contractors of a larger firm. The BLS indicated that the employment of construction managers would likely increase 5% between 2014 and 2024, which is about average as all occupations. The median annual salary in May 2015 was reported as $87,400 for construction managers in all specializations, according to the BLS.
