Engineering technologists solve problems by applying engineering principles. There are many career paths that a student in one of the engineering technologies might take, including industrial engineering, surveyor or sales engineer. Most of these careers require a bachelor's degree in one of the branches of engineering technology.

Essential Information

Most jobs in the engineering technology field require formal education, training, or both. Students wishing to explore this field can enter into an engineering technology program. These programs require a strong background in science, math, and experimental theory. They instruct students in the use and design of technology for engineering, construction and production. Many programs offer specialties, such as architectural engineering technology and medical engineering technology. While the required coursework depends on the focus of the program, some sample course topics include:

A degree in engineering technology provides graduates with the math and science skills they need to help solve real-life problems in a hands-on environment. Engineers design new products and concepts and bring new materials to the market. There are many types of engineers, such as civil engineers, mechanical engineers and industrial engineers. While civil engineers help design construction projects, mechanical engineers work with devices like machines, tools and engines. Industrial engineers work to make the production process less wasteful and more efficient. All of these careers generally require a bachelor's degree related to engineering.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), earnings potentials for engineering professionals vary and depend on location, specialty, and experience. The BLS published the median annual salary earned by civil engineers as $86,640 in May 2018. The same year, mechanical engineers were reported to have earned a median salary of $62,580, while industrial engineers in the 90th percentile or higher earned $132,340 or more per year.

Sales Engineer

Sales engineers use their skills and expertise to make recommendations to companies about the proper equipment purchases for their needs. This requires analytical skills to help solve problems, project future needs, and apply knowledge of current markets and products to clients' individual situations. An engineering bachelor's degree and on-the-job training are usually needed to work as a sales engineer.

New jobs in this field are projected to increase as fast as the national average, as growth will be fueled by overall economic growth and product availability. Earnings for this particular position will be in line with the number and type of goods sold.


The primary responsibility of surveyors is to measure and map the earth's surface. This is a crucial role in the engineering profession, one that defines the boundaries, ownership and uses of land for other workers such as architects. Becoming a surveyor generally requires a bachelor's degree, licensure and less than five years of work experience.

Job opportunities in this profession will increase as fast as the average over the next ten years, per the BLS. In May 2018, the BLS reported that surveyor in the 90th percentile or higher earned $102,220 or more per year, whereas the bottom 10th percentile earned $35,160 or less per year.

Graduates of an engineering technology program should have the math, science, technology and problem-solving skills needed for many careers within this field. Job options are available in sales, surveying and engineering, and each position has different outlooks and salaries.
