New Media Journalism
Creating content for an online publication can be fast-paced since many websites or blogs are often updated daily. Journalists and editors positions for television and radio stations, magazines and newspapers are also available on the new media websites of those old media organizations. Others may work at Web-based organizations or by starting their own online publication.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) competition will be keen for writers and editors, as well as for reporters and correspondents (www.bls.gov). The BLS predicted a 2% employment growth rate for writers from 2014-2024, while the number of jobs for editors are predicted to decline by 5% during that same decade. Reporters and correspondents will face a steeper decline of 8% from 2014-2024. The median salary for writers in 2015 was $60,250, according to the BLS; the median salary for editors was $56,010, while reporters and correspondents earned a median of $36,360.
New media writers and editors may obtain an associate's, bachelor's or master's degree in journalism. The BLS notes that many employers look for applicants with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in related fields, such as communication or journalism. Some schools offer new media courses in areas such as electronic media, cyber journalism and advertising media planning.
New Media Advertising
The primary duties of online account representatives in new media can include selling online advertising and maintaining accounts. These advertising professionals may work on commission or in salaried positions.
The BLS predicted employment opportunities for advertising sales agents, including those in new media, would decrease by 3% from 2014-2024; while opportunities in print ad sales may decline, opportunities in digital advertising are expected to be good. The BLS reported that the median salary for jobs in this field was $48,490 in 2015.
Previous success in other sales positions may be required for new media sales positions, such as account executives. The BLS notes that advertising sales agents can find entry-level employment with a high school diploma; however, training or a degree in related areas, such as advertising, media sales, business or communication, may be a requirement for advanced positions.

New Media Web Developers
Web developers and computer experts are needed to maintain websites and associated computer infrastructure. According to the BLS, Web developers generally need adequate technical software engineering and programming training to administer websites, problem-solve and work with writers, designers and photographers on content systems which may include both text as well as audio, video and graphics. For most of these positions, a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is required; however, some employers may also consider applicants with computer programming skills, code knowledge or certifications. Through programs in new media and Web design, students can learn technical coding, design and programming skills but also may study areas like media writing and Web-based design principles.
