A coffee house supervisor handles a variety of duties ranging from administrative tasks to ensuring the happiness of customers. Depending on the size and type of coffee house, supervisors may be responsible for overseeing everything from hiring staff to keeping the books. Those who work in large or corporate coffee houses may work with other supervisors and assistant managers and have fewer duties than those who work in smaller shops.

Administrative Tasks

A coffee house supervisor may be responsible for recruiting and hiring staff in addition to maintaining work schedules. The schedule must have enough employees to cover each shift, which may require schedule revisions in order to accommodate staff changes. Occasionally, the supervisor may fill in shifts when other staff is unavailable.

Many coffee house supervisors also monitor the payroll and ensure that all paperwork is compliant with Social Security and government regulations. A coffee house supervisor tallies all sales to confirm that receipts match total sales. A coffee house supervisor keeps records of the coffee and food inventory and works with vendors to place orders for food and supplies. They may also work with technicians if any equipment requires repairs.

Customer Service Duties

Maintaining customer satisfaction is an important aspect of a coffee house supervisor's work. The supervisor monitors the coffee house so that the environment is clean and organized. They may also need to deal with upset customers. They may also train staff to make beverages according to preferred standards. It may also be the supervisor's job to teach employees about food preparation and sanitation.

Although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not provide data specific to the employment outlook of coffee house supervisors, it did predict that the employment of all types of food service managers is expected to increase much faster than average from 2018 to 2028 ( Because turnover tends to be high in all service industries, regardless of the overall employment rate, job opportunities will become available during the coming years.


In May 2018, the BLS reported that workers in the 90th percentile or higher earned $92,410 or more per year, whereas the bottom 10th percentile earned $31,580 or less per year. The BLS data indicated that wages for these types of jobs vary widely depending on location and type of establishment.
