College Selection Criteria

Consider the following when looking for a German studies program:

  • Students may wish to look for programs that include a comprehensive background in German literary and cultural history as well as the German language.
  • Students applying to PhD programs may want to research the quality of the schools' teaching staff, indicated by faculty members having earned high honors and recognition internationally and nationally through publications, speaking, research and government programs.
  • Students may want to look for programs with study abroad or internship opportunities for more in-depth exposure to the language and culture.
  • Exchange programs can vary in quality; some colleges offer incentives and financial support, and some have partnerships with universities in Germany and Austria.

Bachelor's Degree in German Studies

A bachelor's degree in German provides students with a solid overview of German language, history and culture. Colleges offering these degrees strongly encourage prospective students to already have a background in the German language.

Most colleges encourage students to develop an interdisciplinary program in order to support careers in areas such as interpreting, teaching, art or working for foreign companies. These programs also serve as preparation for postgraduate studies and careers in German studies or a number of other areas, such as education, marketing, international business, law or teaching a second language.

Master's Degree in German Studies

Master's degree programs in German take students well beyond simply learning to speak the language and immerse them deeply in the culture. Almost all universities require students to have completed a large number of college-level German language classes and be fluent enough in the language to function effectively in German-speaking nations.

Most students are required to study overseas. Many schools offer both thesis and non-thesis options, which students can choose from according to their career goals. Almost all require students to successfully complete a comprehensive exam in order to earn their degrees.

PhD in German Studies

PhD programs prepare students to become active in and out of academia as researchers, scholars and professors in the study of German language, history and culture. Admission can be quite competitive due to the fact that these programs often provide full funding in the form of tuition waivers, scholarships and teaching assistantships. Students must typically complete courses both inside and outside of the German department, pass a qualifying exam and write and defend a dissertation.

Students can find bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in German studies at several private and public institutions. Students should consider things like exchange programs, faculty members and program emphasis when choosing a school to attend.
