Essential Information

CompTIA's Security+ certification exam prep programs focus on the techniques used to secure wired and wireless networks, operating systems, web applications, physical buildings, and computer systems. One such technique is the utilization of specific hardware and software designed for improved cyber security. Data backup and recovery strategies, access control methods, encryption and physical security controls are also studied. Students are expected to have earned Network+ Certification and/or have two years experience in networking and security before enrolling.

CompTIA Security Plus Certification

Students beginning the Security+ certification program learn the theoretical concepts and practical applications of cyber security through courses in introductory information security principles. Before entering into more advanced security topics, students also gain a foundation in computer networks and network devices. From there, operational security subjects such as risk management and incident response are covered. Additional topics covered include:

  • Cryptography
  • Disaster recovery
  • Threat and vulnerability assessment
  • Malware
  • Telecommunication security measures
  • Organizational security planning

Popular Career Options

Although additional certifications or education may be needed for some positions, certified individuals may be eligible for entry-level jobs in information security or networking. Some related positions include:

  • Security specialist
  • Network administrator
  • Security architect
  • Information assurance technician

Salary and Job Outlook

The median salary and employment outlook for these jobs vary. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that jobs for network and computer systems administrators will increase by 5% from 2018 to 2028. Jobs for computer network architects are projected to increase by 5% during the same period. In May 2018, the BLS reported that network and computer systems administrators earned a median annual salary of $82,050, and computer network architects earned a median annual salary of $109,020.

Continuing Education and Certification Information

CompTIA requires certified individuals to complete at least 50 continuing education units and pay applicable fees every three years for credential renewal. Some ways to earn these credits include attending training events, completing college courses, teaching course topics, publishing related materials and earning additional vendor certifications, such as the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) certification.

Individuals may wish to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree related to network security, information technology or information assurance. Students may specialize in security policy creation and management, learn about general information technology concepts or focus on network security management.

Students in a Security+ certification course are taught techniques for properly securing networks, systems, and applications and how to utilize data backup and recovery strategies when security is compromised. There skills make you an asset to a variety of companies who need extra security, with the ability to earn a traditional degree to further your education while taking courses to refresh for recertification every three years.
