Essential Information

At the associate's degree level, computer engineering students learn about the basics of computer systems, as well as system development and circuitry. Some computer engineers design and build PC and laptop systems and related hardware, such as chips, motherboards, and processors. Others specialize in developing software systems, including applications, databases, and spreadsheets. Other degree program fields include mathematics, programming languages, and physical science.

Associate's in Computer Engineering

A 2-year Associate in Science in Computer Engineering program provides students with the necessary basis for beginning their careers in computer systems and technology, including positions in computer hardware, software, and general repair. Courses in an associate's degree program in computer engineering might include:

  • Algebra and calculus
  • Civic communication
  • Composition of the English language
  • Data configuration and programming languages
  • Physical and social sciences
  • Software and program design and development

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that employment for computer hardware engineers would increase by 3% between 2014 and 2024 (www.bls.gov). It also predicted that employment for software developers would increase 17% during that same time period.

May 2015 BLS reports showed that the average annual salary for computer hardware engineers was $114,970. Computer software engineers who specialized in navigational, measuring, electromedical, and control instruments manufacturing earned an annual mean wage of $107,170 per year, while those who specialized in computer systems design and related services made an annual mean salary of $115,550.

Continuing Education Information

Graduates of associate's degree programs in computer engineering might choose to supplement their educational training by pursuing a bachelor's degree through a 4-year educational institution. Some colleges permit students to transfer credits they have earned in an associate degree program to a bachelor's program in computer engineering, computer science or a related field of study.

An associate's degree program in computer engineering equips students with the necessary background in math, science and technology to work as various kinds of computer hardware engineers. Advanced degrees in the field are available for interested students.
