Founded in Lincoln in 1869, the University of Nebraska is now a 4-campus research university and Nebraska's only public institution of higher education. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
UNO's College of Information Science and Technology was opened in 1996 as part of the Peter Kiewit Institute, a recognized pioneer in information technology education. The college offers bachelor's, master's and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs as well as graduate certificates in fields that include bioinformatics, information systems management and computer science.
The Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics program explores the application of information science to biological structures and systems, especially genetics. Students learn to develop new diagnosis and treatment strategies through the analysis of large quantities of genetic and biological data. Information science topics include data mining, warehousing and management.
The Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems trains students to tackle and solve business problems using the tools of quantitative computer analysis. Core classes focus on Java and other programming systems, applied statistics and file structures. Six concentrations are available, including decision support and knowledge management. This specialty examines management strategies for day-to-day organizational performance and future planning through topics such as quantitative analysis, systems modeling and business intelligence. A capstone project using data mining and data warehousing is required.
The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science balances theoretical concepts with experiential learning. This program offers comprehensive training for students who want to continue to graduate school or work as programmers, systems administrators and systems analysts. Required courses feature data structures, computer science, programming languages and applied statistics. Students also select a concentration area, such as Internet technology, which includes in-depth training in data warehousing, data mining and management systems.
The Integrated Bachelor-Master of Science in Computer Science is designed for accelerated studies, this program can be completed in five years. Students may choose a general computer science curriculum or one of seven concentrations, including database and knowledge engineering. Core topics mirror the computer science bachelor's program described above. Those specializing in database and knowledge engineering focus on topics such as advanced database management, information storage and retrieval. In a bioinformatics course, students learn about searches and pattern discovery within databases. Capstone, course work and thesis options are available.
The Ph.D. in Information Technology requires students to develop high-level research projects in areas such as database systems, bioinformatics, data mining and the development of information technology, in preparation for careers in academia or the private sector. Research culminates in a dissertation, and candidates must also pass a comprehensive exam.
