Essential Information

Certificate programs tend to focus almost exclusively on database development, and applicants usually need a foundational computer science background to gain admission. These programs are designed to provide students with an introduction to database design, database application development and database administration. Students in these programs engage in practical, hands-on courses to learn how to create stored procedures and manage a database server such as a SQL server.

Associate's programs may cover some of the same core database topics as certificate programs, with additional general education requirements. Also, more advanced courses in database theories and methodologies. The main admission requirement for associate's programs is a high school diploma, though some prior computing coursework is helpful. Courses are commonly available online. Programs may take up to two years to complete. It's important to note that most database administrators and software developers hold a bachelor's degree in an IT-related field.
