Diploma in General Studies: Program Overview

Diploma programs in general studies aren't typically offered by accredited schools. However, interested students can earn an Associate of General Studies (ASG) degree from a community college.

Essential Information

ASG programs are geared toward students who are interested in taking a broad, interdisciplinary approach to their education or have educational needs that can't be met by traditional curricula. These programs might also be of interest to students who want to get their general education requirements out of the way before going on to transfer to a 4-year degree program. These programs take two years to complete, and many are offered online. Applicants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent.

Associate of General Studies

ASG programs are typically customized based on a student's individual needs and interests. For instance, in transfer-compliant, pre-professional programs, students may be allowed to structure the program around interdisciplinary subjects such as physical education, criminal justice, and video production. Non-transfer programs may allow for greater levels of customization. Despite their flexibility, general studies programs do typically include general education topics. These topics are as diverse as students' chosen electives and usually include:

  • Mathematics
  • Social sciences
  • Literature
  • Physical sciences
  • Music and art
  • Computer science

Popular Career Options

An ASG degree may be used to enhance or explore a range of occupational options. Specialization tracks within associate's degree programs may allow students to seek specific careers. Possible jobs include:

  • Educator
  • Human services professional
  • Health promotion specialist
  • Electronic commerce manager
  • Office administrator

Continuing Education Info

Many ASG programs allow students to apply their course credits toward a bachelor's degree. In this case, students enter the bachelor's degree program with junior standing. Bachelor's degree programs may also correspond to the pre-professional tracks offered by associate's degree programs, such as resource management and outdoor recreation, philosophy, and animation.

Even though you can't earn a diploma in general studies, an ASG degree can give you the freedom to tailor your studies around your interest area. Graduates can seek employment in their chosen field or transfer to bachelor's degree programs for further education.
